Mahjong Basic Rules

Mahjong is a classic game for four players, where everyone is trying to make a winning combination. Your goal is to create four sets (triplet or sequence) and one pair. Here’s how it works:

  • Start of the game: Each player is given 13 tiles, and the dealer receives 14.
  • Gameplay: Players take turns picking up and discarding tiles, trying to make a winning combination faster.
  • Winning: The first player to make four sets (triplet or sequence) and a pair calls “Mahjong” and wins the round. The game ends and the points are tallied.
  • Tie: If all the tiles have been drawn but no one has made a winning combination, the game ends in a tie.

Types of Tile Combinations

In Mahjong, there are several types of combinations that you will use to make a winning hand:

  • Pong (triplet): three identical tiles (e.g. three tiles with the bamboo symbol, number 2).
  • Chow (sequence): three tiles of the same suit in order (e.g. tiles 4, 5, and 6 of the circle).
  • Kong (four of a kind): four identical tiles that give the player an extra turn.
  • Pair: two identical tiles (e.g. two tiles with the number 8).

End of Game

When a player has made four sets (triplets or sequences) and a pair, he calls “Mahjong” and wins the round. The game ends and points are calculated based on the difficulty of the combinations made. The winner is the player with the most valuable hand.
